Kabels Cafe Chermside – it’s the little things

Posted on May 8th, 2017

One of our lovely mums, who’s on the journey with us as we bring you Australia’s best Kid Friendly Cafes, recently sent us a photo of her gorgeous daughter at Kabels Cafe on Corrie Street, in Chermside, Brisbane. Another mum also let us know that she loved it there and always got great coffee when she stopped by. Andy used to frequently pick-up a takeaway coffee from Kabels on his way to work when we lived in the area a few years ago. We knew they delivered good coffee in the past, but this was before our little man came along, and before we had ever even thought about what would make for a Kid Friendly Cafe.

Coffee and treats

So, I thought I’d get in touch with Kabels, and find out exactly what made them Kid Friendly, and find out any inside information about their cafe, for all of you.

I spoke with Jasmin, the owner, barista and manager all wrapped up in to one, to find out more about her cafe. She told us that she isn’t a mum herself, but that she often takes her niece and nephew out to cafes, and understands how difficult it can be to find the perfect place for both parents and kids. She said that she was well aware how bored kids could get at cafes, and that it was something at the forefront of her mind when creating the space at Kabels.

As well as having great coffee and a central location, there are two big boxes of toys that the kids can play with. There’s a small nook with a couch which is just perfect for snuggling up for a coffee and a milkshake with your littlest love. Not many people know this, but Kabels has an outdoor area too, once you walk through the cafe. Jasmin said that this was the one thing most people were surprised by, when they found out about Kabels. “From the front, the cafe can look like a hole in the wall, but we have an enclosed outdoor dining space that is perfect for mums and dads with kids”.

You’ll love their coffee with all your heart

This space is perfect for parents to relax and enjoy their coffee, as it’s enclosed and the kids are welcome to play with the toys that are provided. For little ones who enjoy sitting with some colouring in, colouring in pages are supplied with pencils too. This feature of might be more of a hidden secret than an inside tip, but both we and Jasmin are happy to fill you in!

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a cafe, a kid friendly one, isn’t it? A friendly and welcoming smile can go a very long way when you walk in with a girlfriend and your combined peep of toddlers with a baby or two in arms also (add in sleep deprivation and caffeine withdrawal and you know what I mean). Throw in a private secure courtyard and a box of toys, and you could very well be in Kid Friendly Cafe heaven.

Scrumptious cookie selection

Kabels has a range of homemade goodies on offer including: Monte Carlo biscuits, passion fruit melting moments, chocolate slice, carrot cake and banana bread which all go really well with the house coffee. There’s also a big breakfast and lunch menu, along with a kids menu. The one thing Jasmin told us she would most definitely recommend is the ‘Kabels Bacon and Egg Toastie’ which comes with  homemade relish. The inside tip is that it is one of their specialties.
